Chapter 8: Tools of the Trade
The options when it comes to stocking up on DSLR gear are endless - lenses, cases, diffusers, filters and so on. Of the many accessories you can get, some will be a lot more important than others. On the other hand, there may also be some accessories that you won’t have any practical use for, and those will just take up extra space in your camera bag. Here are some accessories which are absolutely important for efficient, high quality photography work:
Neck Strap: Straps that come with the camera are usually made of irritating fabric, and are also non-padded, so upgrading to a better neck-strap is important. Remember, if you’re not comfortable with carrying your DSLR everywhere, chances are that you’ll subconsciously avoid taking it with you. A good manufacturer of a wide range of neck straps is Op/Tech USA - their Pro Loop Strap is an excellent choice: made from neoprene, it acts like a shock absorber when you’ve got a long lens attached to your camera. There is also a non-slip fabric on its underside to keep the camera in place when it is slung around your shoulder. You can buy it here for just over $20.
Camera bag: A padded bag for your DSLR camera is absolutely vital for carrying it around - it’s a solid investment for protecting your expensive camera, and it provides room for additional lenses and gear. Crumpler is a dependable manufacturer of camera bags that are solid and concealed i.e. they don’t look like typical camera bags - this gives you the advantage of stealth, saving it from prying eyes that may want to sift through your expensive gear. Their ‘Five Million Dollar Home’ bag has enough space for a DSLR with its lens attached, an external flash, an extra lens and several pockets for keeping spare memory cards and batteries. You can get it here for $45.
Dust Blower: Filters and lenses attract dust like magnets, so does the DSLR’s sensor. Therefore, a dust removal device is absolutely essential for good photos, a compressed air can will work, but it is both bulky and expensive. Use a good air blower like Giottos Rocket-air Blower, it is powerful, durable and easy-to-use. One or two blasts will be more than enough to get rid of the dust. It is kept upright by its rocket shaped base, and its air valve prevents dust from gathering in it. It comes in large, medium and small sizes. You can get it here for $12.
Polarizer Filter: A polarizer is very useful for reducing reflections on shiny objects such as glass, while also intensifying colors and deepening the sky’s blue. Hoya, Heliopan and B+W make great polarizers. High quality polarizers have their glass coated to minimize reflections and repel scratches and dirt. They are priced according to their diameters i.e. a 58 millimeter B+W Multi-coated polarizer will cost you $90. You can buy polarizers here for a price ranging from $70 to $200.
